Formation of jadeite and its source.

1. Jadeitite - metamorphic rock.

2. Originated from the oceanic floor (ophiolitic) assemblage with associated rock types and are then metamorphosed to some degree, and now occur as serpentinites, amphiboles, ecologites and meta-sediments.


3. High pressure but low temperature formation. It crystallizes at pressure of 11-17kbar and temperatures 200 – 400°C (Harlow, 1994) corresponding to depths of 30-60km in the mantle.

4. It is a rare occurrence.

5. Jadeite could also be found as boulders and pebbles in conglomerates found in alluvial deposits e.g. Myanmar.
